Schedule 40 PVC adaptors are quite versatile. They can have threaded or slip socket ends to connect to many different types of pipes. Threaded adaptors are available in both male and female threading. They offer all of the benefits of PVC, including strength and durability. These fittings resist damage from corrosive materials, such as those found in soil, and are also not damaged by salt, so they can be used in salt water applications. This makes them a popular choice for aquaculture, and they are also commonly used in irrigation, which sometimes requires the fittings and pipes to be buried underground.
Contractors often choose PVC pipes and adaptors over metal because of the smooth interior. Metal fittings have a slightly rough interior finish. For most applications this is not a problem, but when a steady flow is important, this rough interior finish can slow down the flow. In these instances, PVC, with its smooth interior wall, is the preferred material. While the reduction in flow is minimal, it is eliminated completely with the use of PVC adaptors. PVC adaptors also will not rust, which makes them slightly more durable than their metal counterparts.
Schedule 40 PVC adaptors come in sizes from 1/4 inch to 4 inches. Adapters can also be called reducing couplings, and they may even be listed as two separate items by some sellers, but these two products refer to the same item. For applications where durability is one of the primary considerations, along with affordability, Schedule 40 PVC adaptors are the logical choice.
