  • How Clear is "Clear PVC"?

clear-pvcWhen PVC was first created by Eugen Baumann in the 1800's, there wasn't a big concern about what it looked like. This versatile material is on its own very brittle and hard to work with. Over the years, people learned what additives allowed PVC to be molded into useful things like the pipe and fittings we use today. Since PVC entered the piping scene long ago, there have been many changes in how it's used and who is using it.

Today, PVC is easy to find at the local hardware store and online. You can even buy clothes made from PVC (why you would want to, I'm not sure). Within the PVC pipe market, though, eventually users discovered it would be really nice to be able to see what's going on inside their pipes for some applications. Indeed, we get lots of requests from laboratories and special use buyers who want to see the liquid passing through their pipe, fittings, and valves.

Manufacturers realized there was a viable market for a see-through PVC, so a few of them began producing clear PVC in schedule 40 and schedule 80 wall thicknesses. To this day, only a few US based producers make clear PVC. You can also find some clear PVC products made overseas (usually not as good a quality product).

The biggest factor most buyers look at though, is the clarity of the PVC they're buying. Indeed, some "clear PVC" is more accurately a dark blue! Because this really defeats the purpose, PVC Fittings Online has done our research on which brands are truly the best and clearest. We supply Spears clear PVC for that exact reason - it is one of the clearest and best quality products available. Still, absolutely all clear PVC will have some sort of blue tint to it. This is inevitable. If you are in need of absolutely clear materials, we suggest you check out glass or acrylic products (though you'll pay a hefty sum for them usually). However, if you are still drawn to PVC for its ease of use, affordability, and availability, our clear PVC pipe, fittings and valves are just about as clear as you're going to get - and at a great discount price!
