Cement & Primer
PVC and CPVC solvent cement and primer are used to create bonds between pipe, valves, and fittings. Some industries may refer to these products as PVC piping glue. Primer is applied first to clean and soften the material, then the cement is applied and the parts are joined together. Solvent cement for PVC and CPVC materials is unique in that it actually softens the plastic so that it can weld to itself. This makes PVC bonds extremely strong and long-lasting.

Our Oatey® brand cements and primers are quality solvents for PVC and CPVC. Most primers are formulated to prime both materials, while cements are usually for PVC or CPVC. Because the chemical makeup of the two materials are different, it is important you use the intended solvent cement for the best results. Sometimes called "PVC glue," these products don't rely on the "glue" itself to make pipe and fittings stick together. The pipe and fitting actually form a bond as the solvent cement softens the material.
A properly joined PVC or CPVC joint will use clear or purple primer on the inside of the fitting socket and outside of the pipe. The primer should cover the entire area where pipe will touch fitting. Next, while the primer is still wet, apply the solvent cement on the pipe and fitting. Connect the two making a quarter turn and holding together for 30 seconds. Be careful when joining pipe and and fittings, as they cannot be taken apart or adjusted once the joint is set.
Solvent cements come in different can sizes for the varying job sizes you may encounter. For a single or a small number of joints for example, 1/4 pint of primer and cement is plenty. For big commercial jobs however, contractors can go through many gallons of glue. Our PVC primers and cements include in-cap brushes that make application and storage simple. Always store your glue and primer at the temperature indicated on the packaging and follow all manufacturer instructions.
