I was experimenting with some left over burlap material I had laying around, and I came across an easy way to turn fabric into a fun decorative element. I imagine pairing this burlap tower with dried flowers for fall or filling it with ornaments for the holidays. Here’s how I made it:
Materials Used:
3” Size piece of PVC pipe (in desired length)
Burlap (or other material)
Clear School Glue
Warm Water
Plastic Bowl
To start I mixed half a bottle of the clear school glue with a few tablespoons of warm water. Mix it till it is a smooth consistency all the way through. Next, I wrapped the dry burlap around the pipe and cut the length I wanted. Note that the burlap will stretch slightly when wet.
Once it’s wrapped set it somewhere to dry. The best place is out in the sun, but a shelf will do, too. It’s a good idea to set it on a plate or a plastic bag to catch any dripping as the burlap dries.
I let my tower dry overnight and came back the next day to burlap that was dry and stiff. The trickiest part of this project is getting the burlap off the PVC pipe, but even that wasn't too difficult. I took a small dowel (you could use anything long and skinny) and stuck it in between the pipe and burlap. I ran it along the edge to loosen each side. Next I squeezed the burlap around the pipe and gently slid it off.
Try experimenting with different sizes of PVC for cool layered decor. could also make for an interesting display for earrings - just slip them through the weave to display them for home, store, or trade shows. Have your own ideas for using PVC as a fabric mold? Let us know!
