Build Your Own Candy Chute for Socially Distanced Halloween!

Build Your Own Candy Chute for Socially Distanced Halloween!

Mark Ligon |

Whether you go all out decorating your house for Halloween or like to hand out candy to everyone trick-or-treating, there is one accessory you are going to need to consider, especially with COVID-19, and that is a candy chute. We will go over what you need and how to build it below.

If you are not familiar with a candy chute, it is designed to safely distribute candy. Instead of having trick-or-treaters ring your doorbell or setting out a bowl shared by everyone, you’ll have them stay 6 feet from you and place their candy bucket at the receiving end of your chute while you send candy their way.

When designing a candy chute for your specific needs, you will need to consider the positioning of your front steps (if you don’t have steps, you can still build a candy chute). You will need a slight angle to ensure the candy makes it to the trick-or-treater’s bucket (see images for reference of size to determine how it may work for you).

Here is what you need:

PVC Pipe
2” Orange Pipe for chute channel (5ft length works with our design because fittings add extra distance. Extend your chute by adding pipe on the outside of the wye fittings.)
1-1/2” Orange Pipe for the frame (2)

PVC Fittings
1-1/2” PVC Tee (2)
1-1/2” PVC End Caps (4)
2” x 1-1/2” PVC DWV Wye Fitting (2)

Preparations (Steps to Take Before Construction)

Before you start to assemble, cut one of the 1-1/2” PVC pipe’s into equal lengths of 12”.

Steps for Assembling the Candy Chute

Step 1: Make the body of the chute. Take the Wye Fittings and place them on each end of the 2” pipe so the 1-1/2” outlet is pointing down (both 1-1/2” outlets should point in the same direction).

Step 2: Make the shorter leg of the shoot. Take one of the 12” pieces of pipe and insert it in the 1-1/2” outlet on the left wye fitting.

Step 3: Make the long leg of the shoot. Insert the remaining uncut 1-1/2” pipe into the 1-1/2” hub on the other wye fitting.

Step 4: Begin to make the feet (or base) of the chute. On the open end of each of the 1-1/2” pipe we’ll add the 1-1/2” Tee using the center hub/socket of each tee.

Step 5: Make the feet of the chute. In each of the remaining sockets on the tee, insert the 4 remaining 12” pieces of pipe.

Step 6: Finish the feet. Cap the 12” pieces of pipe using the 4 end caps.

Step 7: Test it out. Adjust your height by shortening each of the base PVC pipes.
