DIY Ring Toss Game Using PVC

DIY Ring Toss Game Using PVC

Mark Ligon |

Are you looking for a backyard game that the whole family can play? Ring toss is a classic game that’s as easy to make as it is to learn and play. Learn how to make your own ring toss set with PVC pipe and fittings using our detailed directions.

How to Setup and Play Ring Toss

Set up your ring toss rack in a large, open space. Then determine where the throwing line should be. For adults and older children, a 10-15 ft. distance would work well. If younger children are playing, you may want to consider moving the line to around 5-8 ft.

Players are divided into two teams, each with a different ring color. Teams take turns tossing the rings around the posts in the rack. Players that step over the throw line will lose a turn. Rings must be completely around the post in order to receive points.

Throwing a ring around the middle post is worth three points, while tossing the ring on the outer posts is worth one point. The first team to make it to 21 points wins!

How to Build the Ring Toss Game (detailed parts list)

Supplies:

• 10 ft. of ¾ in PVC pipe
• 4 - ¾ in. PVC elbows
• 5 - ¾ in. PVC end caps
• 1 - ¾ in. PVC 5-Way
• 10 ft. of ½ in. Clear Vinyl tubing
• 6 - ½ in. copper couplers
• Several pipe cleaners in two colors

Tools:

• Scissors
 PVC pipe cutter
• Hot Glue Gun with Glue

Step by Step Instructions

Step One:

Cut the PVC pipe into the following lengths:
• 4 pieces of 10 in. pipe
• 4 pieces of 12 in. pipe
• 1 piece of 16 in. pipe

Step Two:

Take the PVC 5-way fitting and insert the 16 in. piece of pipe in the center socket.

Step Three:

On the 4 open sockets on the PVC 5-way fitting and insert the 10 in pieces of pipe.

Step Four:

Attach a PVC elbow to the end of each 10 in. pipe, positioning the opening upward. Then, insert a piece of 12 in. pipe into the other end of each elbow.

Step Five:

Top each of the 12 in pipes with a PVC end cap.

Step Six:

Cut the plastic tubing into 6 20 in. pieces. Attach a brass coupler to one end of each piece. Create a ring by connecting both ends of the tube with the brass coupler.

Make it Your Own

Create your own unique rings by sliding a pipe cleaner into each tube. Depending on the length of your pipe cleaner, you may need to use two of the same color. Twist the ends of the two pipe cleaners together, and trim any excess that won’t fit into the tube. Create a ring by connecting both ends of the tube with the brass coupler.

It’s your ring toss game, so customize it however you’d like! Paint the posts or wrap them in colorful tape for a fun and festive look. You can also adjust the rules and scoring to make the game more challenging. Consider giving each post its own point value, from 5 to 25 points, and adjusting the points needed to win. It’s all up to you!

Ring toss is the perfect family game for backyard barbecues, tailgates, and afternoons at the beach. It also makes a great gift. Once you make your own set with PVC and plastic tubing, pass the fun along to friends and neighbors, too!
