Replacing the O-Rings on Your Jandy Valve: A DIY Guide

Replacing the O-Rings on Your Jandy Valve: A DIY Guide

Mark Ligon |

Jandy diverter valves, better known simply as Jandy valves, are special valves specifically for swimming pools. These handy-dandy valves have two to three ports and are used to divert water to and from your pool. There are several different types of Jandy valves, including check, butterfly, and backwash valves, and each one has O-rings that need to be changed regularly.

Changing O-rings on your Jandy valves helps prevent water and air leaks in your pool plumbing system. Leaks, whether they're in your suction or return line, can lead to issues with your pool and pump, and can throw off the plumbing system. Therefore, it's important to replace Jandy valve O-rings regularly to avoid costly leaks.

Unfortunately, information is fairly limited as to how to replace the O-rings on Jandy valves. Luckily, PVC Fittings Online is here to help and we have the information you need to perform a DIY O-ring replacement. Let's dive in!

The Importance of Maintaining Your Jandy Valves

As we said before, when Jandy valves have leaks, they allow water or air to escape from the plumbing line. The biggest risk when this happens is that it reduces the amount of water flowing to your pool pump. Therefore, your pump will have to work harder to keep adequate amounts of water flowing to and from your pool, resulting in higher energy bills and a shorter pump lifespan.

Additionally, there should always be a small amount of water in the pump reservoir, even when the pump is turned off. If the O-rings in your Jandy valve are leaking, the water in the pump reservoir will leak out, which is bad for the pump.

Tools and Supplies You'll Need to Replace Jandy Valve  O-Rings

Before you can get started with your Jandy valve O-ring replacement, you need to gather the tools and supplies necessary to complete the job. Here's a complete rundown of what you may need:

• Power drill with a Phillips head (or other type of head depending on what Jandy valve you have)
• Manual screwdriver with a Phillips head (check the screws on the Jandy valve to confirm)
• Channel-lock wrench
• Lubricant
• Replacement O-rings

How to Replace the O-Rings on Jandy Valves: A Step by Step Guide

If your Jandy valve O-ring is damaged and leaking or it's simply time to replace the O-rings for maintenance purposes, here's what you need to do:

1. Turn off the pool pump by flipping the breaker that provides it power.
2. Turn the relief valve on top of the filter and pump to relieve pressure in the plumbing lines.
3. Remove the screws on top of the Jandy valve cover.
4. Before removing the cover, take a picture of it so that you can reinstall it correctly, with the valve handle pointing the same way as when you removed it.
5. Use a channel-lock wrench or similar tool to grasp, wiggle, and remove the cover.
6. Take the screws out of the cover so that you don't lose them during the O-ring replacement.
7. Loosen the locking knob in the middle of the Jandy valve handle and remove the handle.
8. Remove the O-ring from the faceplate on the bottom of the Jandy valve cover.
9. Next, remove the diverter or shaft portion of the Jandy valve, as there are two smaller O-rings around the shaft.
10. Remove the shaft O-rings, which are at the base of the shaft to which the Jandy valve handle was attached.
11. Use a rag to clean the shaft and the seal area where the larger O-ring will sit. Do the same with the housing area where the Jandy valve inserts.
12. Make sure that your replacement O-rings have the same part numbers as the old O-rings. You should be able to find the part numbers in the pool pump owner's manual or by contacting the manufacturer directly.
13. Slide the shaft O-rings back onto the diverter.
14. Use an approved lubricant to lightly lubricate the shaft O-rings.
15. Place the cover O-ring, which is the larger one, on the faceplate in the same position as the old one you removed.
16. Apply a small amount of lubricant to the cover O-ring as well.
17. Re-insert the diverter and shaft portion of the valve back through the bottom of the valve cover and ensure that both shaft O-rings slide through the assembly's hole.
18. When you put the Jandy valve cover back into the Jandy valve housing, make sure that the inlet label is pointing toward the pump.
19. Set the valve cover back into the valve housing. Consult the picture you took before you started so that you re-install it correctly.
20. Re-insert the screws back into the valve cover and tighten them, but don't overtighten.
21. Place the Jandy valve handle back on top of the valve assembly and tighten the locking knob that holds it in place.
22. Turn the power back on to the pump.
23. Close the pressure relief valve.
24. Turn the pump on and prime it.
25. Check for leaks from the Jandy valve or any other parts of the pump or plumbing lines.

Although there are a number of steps to follow to replace your Jandy valve O-rings, they are all quite manageable. All in all, a novice can replace their O-rings in less than 30 minutes, while a professional can do it in less than 10.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

While the overall job of replacing your Jandy valve O-rings is fairly straightforward, it's easy to make mistakes during the process. To make so that you don't do that, here are a few things to avoid:

• Overtightening the valve cover screws because you could crack the faceplate. While you can remove the screws with a power tool, it's better to tighten them by hand to avoid overtightening.
• Choosing the wrong O-rings. Check the owner's manual or contact the pump manufacturer to ensure you choose compatible replacement O-rings.
• Forgetting to lubricate the O-rings when you put the new ones on. Even though Jandy advertises their O-rings as "Never Lube," that simply means you don't have to add lubricant during maintenance. Lubricating the O-rings when you replace them can extend their lifespan and prevent leaks.

By following these simple instructions and maybe even watching an online tutorial, you should have little to no trouble replacing your Jandy valve O-rings.
