What's the difference between PVC and CPVC?

The main difference between schedule 80 CPVC and schedule 80 PVC is the temperature rating. Schedule 80 CPVC is known for being able to handle higher temperature applications (up to 200F unlike PVC which can handle up to 140F). This difference makes CPVC a better choice for hot water handling. Schedule 80 CPVC pipe has the same sizing system as standard PVC pipe. It comes in a light gray color to distinguish it from white and dark gray PVC.

Chemically speaking, CPVC differs from PVC in the way it's made. This process actually chlorinates the thermoplastic, giving it slightly different properties. CPVC stands for chlorinated polyvinyl chloride. This type of pipe is suitable for a broad range of applications ranging from hot and cold water handling to industrial type uses.
