Types of Specialty PVC Fittings

Side Outlet Tees add a fourth opening at 90° to a standard tee, letting you run pipe in three dimensions. Common in structural frames and complex plumbing junctions.

How to Work with Specialty PVC Fittings

  • Choose the right size. PVC uses a nominal sizing system. A 1" fitting fits 1" pipe regardless of schedule. Just match the nominal size labels.
  • Cut your pipe to length. Use a ratchet-style PVC cutter for pipe up to 2" or a miter saw for larger sizes. Deburr the cut edges so the pipe seats fully in the fitting.
  • Dry-fit your assembly first. Assemble everything without adhesive to confirm fit and alignment before committing.
  • Decide whether to glue or leave dry. Pressurized systems need solvent welding. Structural and furniture projects can often stay friction-fit for easy disassembly. A self-tapping screw at each joint adds strength without making things permanent.
  • Apply primer, then cement (for permanent joints). Primer softens the plastic so cement creates a chemical weld. Apply both to the pipe end and the fitting socket, push together with a quarter turn, and hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Use PVC cement for PVC and CPVC cement for CPVC.
  • Protect outdoor builds from UV. Furniture-grade fittings are UV-stabilized out of the box. If using plumbing-grade fittings outdoors, a coat of plastic-rated spray paint will help prevent yellowing and brittleness.

Specialty PVC Fittings vs. Standard Plumbing Fittings

Standard plumbing fittings are designed to move water through walls and under floors. They connect pipe in two or three directions on a single plane and are built to be hidden, not seen.

Specialty fittings are designed for three-dimensional construction, unusual angles, and visible applications. They offer multi-port configurations (4-way, 5-way, side outlets) that plumbing fittings don't come in. Furniture-grade versions are UV-stabilized, impact-modified, and free of manufacturer stamps for a clean, finished appearance.
