How to Build a PVC Bike Stand

Step 1: Measure and Cut PVC Pipe

Once you've gathered all the necessary materials, the first step is to cut your PVC pipe into the appropriate lengths. Using the tape measure and PVC cutter, measure and cut the PVC pipe into eight 24" lengths, four 2" lengths, four 3" lengths, two 12" lengths, and two 36" lengths. Cutting lengths that line up exactly with measurements can be tricky, so you may want to use a marker to mark your measurements on the pipe. Don't worry if you mess up one or two of the cuts; you will have excess PVC pipe in case something goes wrong.

Step 2: Construct the Frame

The next step is to construct the outer frame of the PVC Bike Stand. Before you start, it's a good idea to take a soft cloth and wipe down the ends of your cut PVC lengths to remove any loose fragments. First, take your two 36" lengths of PVC and attach an elbow joint to both ends of each length, forming the left and right sides of your PVC Bike Stand. The joints should face the same direction, pointing outward towards the opposite end of the frame, like so: PVC bike stand open frame

Next, join each of the 4 elbow joints to a tee connector using your four 3" lengths of PVC pipe.  After that, connect each tee to a second connector using your four 2" lengths of PVC pipes. The unused hole in each tee connector should be turned at a 45-degree angle (halfway between pointing straight up and lying flat on the ground) and should face inwards towards the opposite side of the PVC Bike Stand. After following these steps, your PVC Bike Stand should look like this:PVC bike stand open frame 2

Position each side of the frame about 1' apart, and connect the left and right sides of the frame using your two 12" lengths of PVC pipe. Your rack should now be square in shape.

Step 3: Construct the Bike Mounts

The third, and final, step in making your own PVC Bike Stand is to construct the bike mounts. Take two 24" lengths of PVC pipe and stick them in both ends of an elbow joint, forming a "V" shape.

Make three more of these so you have four total mounts. Insert the mounts into the tee connectors, and you're almost done! Now that you're sure the parts for your PVC Bike Stand fit together properly, deconstruct the rack and apply PVC primer and cement to the end of each PVC length and to the inside of each connector (wear goggles and gloves; PVC cement is potent!). If you prefer a more portable PVC Bike Stand that can be easily descontructed, you can leave it uncemented.

And you're done! After letting the PVC cement dry (if you choose to use it), you can paint your PVC Bike Stand to add a personal touch. Now you have your own bike stand made out of PVC products: a lightweight, portable way to store your bikes!

If you have more than two bikes, then the above rack may not be the one for you. But don't sweat it! We have instructions for a PVC bike stand / rack that can hold as many bikes as you need. Watch our video instructions below. Take note: the pipe lengths and fittings are different than the ones listed above.
