You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, but you may need to use something similar, such as PVC piping, to move heavy objects. PVC pipes are strong and able to withstand a lot of weight without warping or breaking. This makes for a good tool for moving heavy objects when other tools, such as a dolly, are not available. This is often called pipe rolling.
What Makes PVC Good for Moving Heavy Objects?
PVC is lightweight: This makes it useful in moving heavy objects. Someone with less strength can help move something that they normally may not have been able to assist with.
Using PVC pipes in the pipe rolling method reduces friction on the ground: This allows the object to roll smoothly across the top of the pipes.
Since the process calls for pipes only, you don’t need to worry about other equipment: The object simply sits on top of several pipes. As you move the object, the pipes roll underneath and move from the front to the back of the object as it travels.
How to Move Heavy Objects Using PVC
You’ll need about 3 to 4 lengths of standard PVC pipe; more may be required depending on the size of the object being moved. The lengths will vary but should be long enough so that the item you’re moving fits on top of the pipes. You’ll need to position the PVC pipes close together so that when the object is off the ground the pipes can be rolled underneath it.
Once the object is off the ground and relying solely on the PVC pipes for support, you can slowly begin to move it. As the object rolls over the top of the PVC pipes you’ll need to rotate the pipes from the back of the object to the front of the object. Leave a few inches between each pipe to allow the pipes to roll without any additional friction.
Types of Items That can be Moved Using PVC
You can move just about any object using the PVC pipe rolling method. One of the most common objects, that is moved by landscapers every day, is large stones or rocks. When installing landscape designs that include large boulders or stones, PVC pipe is used to roll the stone from the truck to its final destination. If you need to move gym equipment from one side of the room to another, rolling pipes make that job easier. Moving a shed in your yard often requires heavy equipment, but using the right PVC pipes and rolling the shed into its new location could save you an equipment rental fee. For large bulky items like sheds and exercise equipment, you may need a few more people to assist, but you might not even break a sweat.
You're Ready to Start Your Move!
Now that you know about the pipe rolling process, you are able to use PVC pipes to make moving heavy objects easier. Make sure you have enough hands available to help you move pipes from the back to the front of the object and maintain control during movement. Since the pipes reduce the friction with the ground, it could become easy for the object to move quickly with little to no force.
