Pool toys can be super expensive, and the only thing worse than pricey pool toys is not having any toys to enjoy at all! We’ve put together instructions for you to build your own floating basketball hoop for the pool. All you need is some PVC pipe, PVC fittings, a pool noodle, a basketball, and a net!
Materials:
- 17’ of ¾” PVC pipe
- 8 – ¾” 90-degree PVC Elbows
- 8 – ¾” PVC Tees
- 1 – Basketball Net
- 1 – Pool Noodle
- 1 – Basketball/Pool worthy replacement
- Zip-Ties – Optional – use these to secure the noodle to the base.
Tools:
- PVC Cutter or Hacksaw
- Tape Measure
- PVC Primer and Cement for a secure connection.
Steps for Assembly
Step 1: Cut the Pipe & Noodle
Cut 4 lengths of PVC pipe to 20”
Cut 8 lengths of PVC pipe to 8”
Cut 8 lengths of PVC pipe to 6”
Cut 8 lengths of pool noodle to 5-1/2”
Step 2: Assemble the Base
Take 1 90-degree elbow and insert an 8” piece of pipe into both open sockets. Repeat 3 more times.
Connect the 4 elbow shapes with 4 Tees to make a square with the center sockets of the 4 tees facing the same upward direction.
Step 3: Assemble the Hoop
Take 1 90-degree elbow and insert a 6” piece of pipe into both open sockets. Repeat 3 more times.
Connect the 4 elbow shapes with 4 Tees to make a square with the center sockets of the 4 tees facing the same upward direction.
Step 4: Connect the Hoop & Base
Insert the 4 20” long pieces of pipe into the open sockets of the base, then into the 4 open sockets of the hoop.
Step 5: Attach the Pool Noodles
On the base, attach the pool noodles. You can make a cut lengthwise on the pool noodle so that it slips over the PVC pipe along the base. The pool noodle should cover each 8” length of pipe along the base. Using zip-ties to secure the noodles to the base may be helpful.
Step 6: Attach the Net
Attach your net to the hoop. You can thread the net through the connections or use zip-ties to secure it.
Your DIY floating basketball hoop is ready for action! Jump in the pool with your basketball and you’re all set. With the strength and durability of PVC, your hoop can withstand the elements and you’ll be able to play basketball in your pool for years to come. You may need to inspect your pool noodles along the base each season.
