Riding your bike often requires the occasional tune-up or repair. If you don’t have a bike stand, you are likely making the job harder than it has to be. Here are instructions you can follow to build your own bike stand to help make repairs go smoothly.
Bike Repair Stand Materials List:
- (4) 116" length of 1 1/2" diameter pipe for the base supports
- (1) 3" length of 2" diameter pipe for the bike rests

- (2) 1 1/2" 90-degree elbow fittings
- (2) 1 1/2" end cap fittings
- (1) 1 1/2" 4-way cross fitting
Tools:
- PVC Cutter or Hack Saw
- Tape Measure
- File (or rotary tool)
- Sand Paper
- Primer & Cement
How To Build a Bike Repair Stand
Step 1: Cut Pipe to length
- Cut (4) 15" lengths of 1 1/2" diameter pipe for the base supports
- Cut (2) 34" lengths of 1 1/2" diameter pipe for the legs
- Cut (1) 16" length of 1 1/2" diameter pipe for the down-tube support
- Cut (1) 51" length of 1 1/2" diameter pipe for the base outrigger
Cut the 3” length of 2” diameter pipe down the center of the pipe length-wise to create 2 half circles.
Step 2: Prepare the Frame Rests
Using one of the half circles and the 4-way cross, attach the half-circle piece of pipe between 2 of the socket ends so that the open end of the half circle is facing upwards. This is where the bottom bracket of the bike will rest.
Take one of the Tee fittings and the other half-circle piece of pipe. Now on the center socket of the tee, trace out a half-circle to match the other open ends of the tee. Using the file or rotary tool, cut out the half-circle and attach the 3” length of pipe to the top part of the frame rest.
Step 3: Assemble the Bike Repair Stand
Take the 2 remaining Tees and insert the four 15” lengths of pipe into the outer sockets, leaving the center socket open. Cap off two of the 15” lengths on the same side. On the opposite side, add the two 90-degree elbows. Make sure the open socket ends are facing each other. Use the 51” length of pipe to connect the two elbows.
Take the two 34” lengths of pipe and insert each one into the center socket of the tees.
Take the 4-way cross with the half circle facing upward, and insert the open side of the 34” pipes into the open downward facing sockets.
Take the modified Tee with the half circle pipe attached and insert the 16” length of pipe into an open socket on the tee.
Take the open end of the 16” length of pipe and insert it into one of the open sockets of the 4-way cross.
At this point, you have built your DIY bike repair stand. You’ll want to make sure that each connection is secured with cement and primer to provide a sturdy base for the bike.
Adjustments
You may need to use a file, sandpaper, or rotary tool to adjust the PVC half circle where the bike’s bottom bracket will sit. The rear forks could impact how the bike sits on the repair stand. These plans are for adult-size bikes, but if you need to use this design for a smaller bike you can shorten the 16” length of pipe to the size that works best for you.
Enjoy your next ride!
