April 17th is International Haiku Poetry Day, a special day set apart to appreciate everyone's favorite form of Japanese poetry. Haiku is an ancient art form, with its roots somewhere around 700-1100, during the Heian period of Japanese culture. It took on the form we know today sometime around the 17th century and has since picked up international fame.
Though most people can recognize a haiku, not everyone knows how to write one. Many people believe it's just three lines, but that's not the only requirement. Many others think haiku have to rhyme because they're poetry, but most don't rhyme at all. Writing a haiku is actually very simple and has only two rules:
- It must consist of three lines.
- The first line must have 5 syllables, the second must have 7, and the third must have 5.
It's as simple as that! Almost. Most haiku focus on nature and feature a juxtaposition of two opposing ideas. So while the rules are straightforward, writing a meaningful haiku that makes you stop and think or reflect is pretty difficult. Here at PVC Fittings Online, we figured it would be fun to give haiku-writing a shot. Keep reading for our attempts at haiku poetry.
