How to Install a PVC Repair Coupling

How to Install a PVC Repair Coupling

Mark Ligon |

You’ve had a loss of water pressure; you notice a puddle of water where there shouldn’t be any water. After digging and finding a crack in your pipe you start figuring out what to do. You remember that you saw PVC Repair Couplings for sale at PVCFittingsOnline.com. But how do you install a repair coupling? PVC Repair couplings are installed similar to regular PVC fittings but require a few more steps.

What is a PVC Repair Coupling?

A PVC Repair Coupling is a coupling that is used to repair small sections of broken PVC pipe. The old damaged section of pipe is removed and the repair coupling is installed in its place. You would use a repair coupling if you needed to get a pipeline back up and running quickly and didn’t have time to replace an entire section of pipe. You may also choose to use a repair coupling rather than replacing an entire section for budgetary reasons, as the repair couplings are relatively inexpensive.

Materials You’ll Need

• Saw or Cutter

 Primer & Solvent Cement

• De-burr & Bevel Tool (optional)

Steps for Installing a PVC Repair Coupling

Step 1 (for Repair Couplings with Socket x Spigot Ends)
On the Spigot end of the repair coupling, solvent weld a coupling.

Step 2
Compress the repair coupling. Use the coupling compressed to mark the section of the damaged pipe you need to remove.

Step 3
Cut out the broken section of pipe with either a saw or pipe cutters. Cut as squarely as possible. Clean the cut section. (If you choose to do so you can de-burr and bevel it).

Step 4
Solvent Weld one end of the coupling to the pipe. Cure time will depend on the solvent cement used and the temperature but typically expect about 5 minutes.

Step 5
Solvent Weld the other end of the coupling to the other end of the pipe. Cure time will depend on the solvent cement used and the temperature but typically expect about 5 minutes.

Step 6
After the joints have fully cured you can now pressure test.

PVC is a durable and versatile material, but it's not infallible. One way to ensure that your plumbing continues functioning properly is by using PVC repair couplings to replace damaged sections of pipe. These fittings are easy enough for the average homeowner to install without professional help; all you need is some basic tools and supplies, as well as patience.
